CU x TMU Workshop 2024

by Waricha Wongphyat. Ph.D. (editor)

This book is a summary of the second International Workshop on Architecture and Urbanism, jointly organized by the Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences, Tokyo Metropolitan University, and the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, held in September-October 2024. Entitled “Towards the 21st Century Urban Resilience: Design for Adaptability,” the workshop focused on revitalizing the Minami Osawa neighborhood in Tokyo.

The program consisted of lectures, site visits, and interactive discussions. Leading experts, including Dr. Jorge Almazan (Associate Professor, Keio University), Dr. Tohru Yoshikawa (Professor/Dean, Tokyo Metropolitan University), Mitsuyoshi Miyazaki (architect and founder of Hagiso), and Atsushi Yokomizo (architect and founder of Studio Megane), shared their perspectives on emergent urbanism of Tokyo and other pertinent themes.

Field excursions to Shibuya, Yanaka, and Tama New Town provided a rich tapestry of urban experiences, revealing how the old and new coexist in diverse contexts. These explorations stimulated vibrant dialogue and the development of innovative design proposals.

Our students proposed bushitsu, tsunagu, and yojouhanas crucial concepts for adaptable design. These principles, bridging macro and micro scales, aim to foster a harmonious relationship between people, architecture, and the urban environment in a meaningful way.
