CU x TMU Workshop 2024

by Waricha Wongphyat, Ph.D. (editor)

This booklet documents the journey of the third international workshop on architecture and urbanism, jointly organized by the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University, and the Faculty of Urban Environmental Sciences, Tokyo Metropolitan University. Held in October-December 2024, the workshop focused on enhancing the rich architectural and cultural identity of the Baan Krua community. Through a dynamic program, participants delved into the essence of Baan Krua, exploring its past and present through a series of engaging activities:

Special lectures, which comprised Learning from Bangkok / Learning in Bangkok by Dr. Yoshihiko Ito (Associate Professor, Tokyo Metropolitan University), Water-based settlement and dwelling in Thailand by Dr. Waricha Wongphyat (Associate Professor, Chulalongkorn University), and Traditional dwelling and everyday heritage at Baan Krua community by Chaipat Ngambutsabongsophin (Lecturer, Chulalongkorn University), provided insightful perspectives on Bangkok’s dwelling landscape and the unique character of Baan Krua. Furthermore, professional architects, including Prat Tinrat and Siwat Wittayalertpanya (founders, CODE studio), Viphob Manopanjasiri (architect, CHAT Architects), and Yossapon Boonsom (founder, Shma company limited) shared their expertise, emphasizing the crucial role of designers in regenerating everyday architecture and crafting quality public spaces.

Field excursions to a hundred-year-old water-based settlement in Ayutthaya along with adaptive and contemporary architecture in Bangkok fostered lively discussions and sparked creative thinking among students from both universities. Fueled by the insights gained, the workshop culminated in impactful design proposals, driven by four key themes: small, soft, slow, and savoring. These proposals aimed to forge a harmonious connection between people, architecture, and the urban environment, ultimately envisioning a meaningful and sustainable future for Baan Krua. In addition, through discussions with team members, participants developed communication and teamwork skills as well as analytical thinking and better understanding of Thai and Japanese culture and architecture.

This booklet serves as a testament to the collaborative efforts and innovative ideas that emerged from this transformative workshop experience. We invite you to explore its contents and witness the inspiring journey of architectural exploration and community regeneration.
